Frequently Asked Questions

Insurance can be confusing — especially when it comes to mental health benefits.
This page explains copays, deductibles, and superbills in clear, simple language so you always know what to expect.

A superbill is a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company when you pay out of pocket.

A superbill includes:

  • Diagnosis code

  • CPT code (session type)

  • Provider license, NPI, and tax ID

  • Date of service

  • Amount paid

Why Clients Use Superbills

Submitting a superbill may allow you to:

  • Receive partial reimbursement

  • Have what you paid count toward your deductible

  • See a therapist who is out-of-network

  • Use lower cash-pay rates while still receiving reimbursement

Many clients with high deductibles find this more affordable.

A copay is a fixed dollar amount you pay at each visit.

Common examples include:

  • $20 for a primary care visit

  • $40 for a specialist

  • $10–$50 for medication management

Many insurance plans do not use copays for therapy sessions.
Most mental health services fall under Behavioral Health, which often has separate rules from regular medical care.

If your plan does include a copay for psychotherapy, our office will confirm that with your insurance.

Insurance billing may be best when:

  • Your deductible has already been met

  • You have a low copay for therapy

  • You prefer the simplicity of direct insurance billing

  • You are using HSA/FSA funds

We will always help you determine which option is more cost-effective.

Cash pay plus a superbill may be better when:

  • Your deductible is high

  • You haven’t met your deductible

  • The insurance contracted rate is higher than our cash pay rate

  • You want transparent, predictable pricing

  • You want to choose your provider freely

This option can help clients lower their immediate costs while still applying payments toward their insurance benefits.
